For anyone who watches True Blood, here is your own bottle of V. If not, here is a bottle of homemade vanilla.

I mentioned before that I was making homemade vanilla for Christmas presents this year. It was not difficult at all, and I really enjoyed how they turned out. It was, however, much more expensive than I anticipated. (Not terribly expensive, just more than I thought it would be.)

I say it was more expensive because typically I wouldn’t give 30 of my closest friends a gift. I wanted to make these for my family members and the children’s teachers, but since that consists of about a dozen people, the remaining dozen and a half were just because I was feeling crafty and ambitious.

In the end, I’m really glad that I made as many as I did. Who really cares about the extra cash once it’s already spent and the gift is made, right? It felt awesome giving them away, and I think (hope) everyone really liked it.

So how do you make this beautiful vanilla? At one point someone brought me some from Mexico where it is apparently the best. Since then I buy the imitation stuff which is no good… Maybe I’ll have to steal this gift idea in the future!

This is the link to where I posted it. It’s quite simple. You get a small bottle that you want to use, add a vanilla bean, and add vokda. There is a ratio of vanilla beans to vodka, but with the size of bottles I had (really small), just using one bean split in half and filling the rest with vodka was enough.
Good luck! Order your bottles online since you live in a place where something like this isn’t readily available. Same with the beans.
