Thomas, 6 months

By maggieroe

We took Thomas for his six month check up last Friday.  He was actually six months and 12 days, so almost six and a half months old.  The nurses measured his head, length, and weight.  After telling the doctor what his stats were, he sent the nurse back in to remeasure his head.  It was right the first time.

Thomas weighs in at 17 lbs and 6 ounces, and is a whopping 28 inches long.  This puts him in the 41% for weight and 89% for height.

His head, on the other hand, measures at 16 1/2 inches, only 6%.  Yes, my friends, his head is 94% smaller than all of the other kids his age.  The doctor wanted to remeasure because this isn’t always a good thing.  Luckily, his head is growing at a steady rate, or at least on a nice curve on the growth chart.  It is a half an inch larger than the last time it was measured, too.

The doctor did a thorough check-up and determined that he’s a smart kid, so brain development is going well.  This was his concern.  I guess if the head isn’t growing, the brain isn’t growing either, right?  Well, Thomas is completely on schedule with the other milestones for children his age, and ahead of some, too.  He’s quite the social baby, and it was very aparent in his visit.  He was very complimentary of him and said that he wishes all babies were as happy as he is when they come to see him.

I really do have a happy baby.  I thought when I had James that he was a happy baby.  Now that I have Thomas I realize that babies can get even happier.  Thomas never cries.  He’s never unhappy.  Occassionally he’ll fuss when he’s hungry or wants to be moved, but he hardly ever cries.  Well, unless he’s missing  a pacifier at night.  He’ll sure let out some wails then!

All of this being said, I can’t believe I actually had a C-section with Thomas.  It was all because of the size of James’s head.  That’s why the doctor made me do it.  Come on now…6%?  I could have done that in one push!

His head is not 94% smaller than all the other kids his age; his head is smaller than 94% of other kids his age. That’s way different. If his head was 94% smaller, it would look like an orange or something! He looks perfectly normal. And absolutely adorable!

Darn that Aunt Joey…I couldn’t wait until I read and re read what you wrote and she caught it first. Oh spooky minds…which I’m sure Joey wouldn’t agree.
But you are right Boot…James was a happy baby and still is a happy, loving, well adjusted young man. Thomas on the other hand (smaller head or not) is the happiest little guy ever.
Like Pop has said maybe once before…..
    Gotta love those grandbabies

    Yea- what she said.

In all fairness, that’s what I meant, but I am not about to go back after those comments and change it now. And besides, even if he did have a head the size of a walnut, which we determined is more like it and not an orange, he’d still be the cutest kid ever.
